Saturday Girl began in Leeds as a series of portraits of young women specifically as seen through their hairstyles. Now on tour, Casey Orr has selected other cities in which to base her work and studio. In advance of LOOK/15: Exchange, Casey takes portraits of women who visit her pop-up studio, creating images that reflect on the fantastically creative ways girls have of expressing themselves. Dyed, cut; sprayed and shaved; hair has become a way of stating individuality and belonging to a tribe. It reflects past trends, passed down intuitively through culture. Saturday Girl is an exploration of what hair means culturally and personally to young women and how they experience and use the power inherent in becoming visible as women.
