Two special talks to introduce the fifth National Photography
Symposium taking place the following day.

The first talk is by celebrated Liverpool-based landscape photographer John Davies on The Landscape as Self-Portrait. He will consider how much a landscape photograph can say about the photographer who took it.

His starting point will be reflecting on his own experience and then other landscape artists, expanding to documentary photojournalism. He then introduces the role of curators and editors in their choice of self-reflective subjects and issues. The talk will be about photography and the editing, selection and choices we make individually
and collectively.

The second is by the photographer Laura Pannack. In a presentation entitled Looking Through the Lens Laura explores trust, vulnerability and self-image in the photographic portrait.

Laura's art focuses on social documentary and portraiture, and seeks to explore the complex relationship between subject and photographer. She has won multiple awards including the Portrait Singles category of World Press Photo, and the Royal Photographic Society's Vic Odden Award for a notable achievement in the art of photography by a British photographer aged 35 or under.
